Q:
I recently transplanted a coffee plant (Coffea arabica) from a passive hydroponic system to an active homemade setup consisting of a 3.5-gallon bucket with a pump at the bottom attached to an elbow that blasts nutrient into the net pot lid sitting on top of the bucket. I am using a two-part hydro nutrient with some seaweed as fertilizer. Since the transplant, the plant has ten new leaves that are emerging at the same time and rate. Is there any danger or concern with this rate of growth?
A:
As long as it's not growing teeth and demanding that you feed it, you should be fine. You're coffee plant is just letting you know it's happy with its new home! While passive systems deliver water and nutrients to growing plants, they don't employ active aeration devices to oxygenate the nutrient solution. When plant roots are exposed to a good ratio of air to water, they absorb nutrients more rapidly ultimately contributing to their accelerated growth rates.
