Q:
I read somewhere that you can't take cuttings from plants after they start to flower. We were hoping to grow some favorite tomatoes in hydroponics during the winter. Can you help us?
A:
While it's not ideal to take cuttings from flowering plants, it can be done. The challenge is reverting the cutting back into a vegetative state. To improve your chances for success, take your cuttings within the first three weeks of flowering, and expose them to a 20-hour light cycle once you bring them inside. A basic timer and some supplemental lighting from a high-output fluorescent can help you get a few starts growing.
